MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor)

The MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor) is a critical component in modern internal combustion engines. It measures the pressure within the intake manifold and provides this data to the engine control unit (ECU). The ECU uses this information, along with other sensor inputs, to determine the optimal fuel and air mixture for combustion, adjust ignition timing, and manage engine performance.

What is a MAP Sensor?

The MAP sensor measures the absolute pressure inside the intake manifold of the engine, which corresponds to the engine’s load and air intake. The pressure changes as the engine operates under various conditions (e.g., idle, acceleration, or deceleration). By interpreting these pressure readings, the MAP sensor helps the engine control system make necessary adjustments to fuel delivery, air intake, and ignition timing.

The sensor typically uses piezoelectric or capacitive technology to convert the pressure readings into an electrical signal that the ECU can process. In many vehicles, the MAP sensor is integrated with the barometric pressure sensor, which measures atmospheric pressure, and is part of the same unit.
