How the Camshaft Position Sensor Works:

The camshaft position sensor typically uses one of two basic technologies to detect the camshaft's position:

  1. Magnetic (Inductive) Sensors:

    • These sensors use the principle of electromagnetic induction. The sensor has a coil, and as the camshaft's teeth or other markers pass near the sensor, they induce a voltage in the coil, creating a signal.
    • The signal generated by the sensor is processed by the ECU to determine the camshaft’s position.
  2. Hall Effect Sensors:

    • The Hall Effect sensor detects changes in magnetic fields as the camshaft's reluctor wheel (a toothed wheel or cam lobes) passes by the sensor. When the reluctor wheel aligns with the sensor's magnetic field, it triggers a voltage change that the ECU interprets as a signal.
    • Hall Effect sensors provide a more precise digital signal and are less prone to electrical noise or interference than inductive sensors.
