AIR FLOW SENSORS
An automotive air mass sensor, more commonly known as the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, is a crucial component in modern fuel-injection systems. Its primary function is to measure the amount of air entering the engine, which is critical for the engine control unit (ECU) to calculate the correct amount of fuel to inject for optimal combustion. This helps maintain engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions control.
Types of Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensors:
There are two primary types of MAF sensors used in vehicles:
-
Hot Wire MAF Sensor (Most Common):
- How it works: This type uses a heated wire or film that is positioned in the airflow path. As air flows over the wire, it cools the wire down. The ECU measures how much power is required to keep the wire at a constant temperature. The amount of cooling correlates with the mass of air flowing through the sensor, allowing the ECU to calculate air mass.
- Pros: Highly accurate and commonly used in modern vehicles.
- Cons: Sensitive to contamination, which can lead to inaccurate readings.
-
Vane-type (Flap) MAF Sensor:
- How it works: This type uses a flap or vane that is deflected by the airflow entering the intake. The movement of the vane is translated into an electrical signal that corresponds to the amount of air flowing into the engine.
- Pros: Simple design.
- Cons: Less accurate than hot wire sensors, and more prone to wear over time.
